Rocky is seeking a foster to adopt home locally to us in Swadlincote, South Derbyshire (within sensible travelling distance of here and/or Solihull) please read his write up carefully.
Rocky came to us as a tiny 16 week old puppy after his owner purchased him then discovered he had a significant heart murmur that she couldnt afford investigations for. He went straight to our cardiologist who diagnosed severe pulmonary stenosis, Rocky needed to immediately go onto medication which supported his heart as he grew bigger before he could have a procedure to help his condition.
Rocky was also born completely DEAF, he has a crumpled ear and he has a retained testicle, he has been chemically castrated currently but will need full castration in a few months time. Rocky had a stent put into his heart at Willows referrals several weeks ago and is doing brilliantly, he is still on medication for now but we are hoping that will be stopped in a few weeks time, he needs to have a follow up heart scan at Willows in Solihull in February which we will of course pay for along with his medication.
As Rocky grew up in his foster home he began to show some resource guarding behaviour around food towards other dogs and cats, this then extended to food on people's plates as they were eating on the sofa as well as his own food and treats. It did result in his foster getting bitten as she got between the dogs and Rocky diverted onto her unintentionally. However since coming back to HQ where we initially did see that behaviour very apparently, Rocky has since mellowed massively around food and has been no problem and is easy to manage. He does need a firm, confident and consistent owner who won't baby him.
He gets on really well with other dogs and just loves to play, he really enjoys their company.....just not when food is around. Being deaf can make it difficult to get his attention sometimes and he doesn't hear other dogs grumbling at him for example so we have been working with hand signals to help him. He will need another dog who is willing to play with him as he will pester an older dog to play and not really get it when he gets told off. Another playful Frenchie or similar would be fab for him.
Rocky is an absolute sweetheart 99% of the time and we have no issues with him, he is loving, friendly, playful and just loves to have a snuggle with you.
He is generally a really good boy in the home and will settle down being left for several hours without any trouble, his house training has a step backwards as he is currently needing to be kept separated from some of the very large dogs here as they arent great with little ones but he will use a puppy pad a lot of the time, it is his biggest issue at the moment though I would say and will need some time and patience to crack.
He is enjoying his food and has got a bit of a sensitive tummy, we have found Lilys kitchen and a fish based kibble suits his sensitive tummy well, we will supply his food during any foster period. We manage his mealtimes by just feeding him separately from the other dogs here and we dont give any long lasting treats around other animals.
He loves his walks and whilst he does weave about a bit on the lead he generally walks well on his harness, being deaf he only goes offlead in an enclosed field, otherwise he is happy running around on a longline.
He can be a pain with cats so best in a feline free home and sadly we can't rehome him with resident children due to his guarding around food.
